Materials

You will need:

  • A coloured pencil.
  • A sheet of paper
  • An eraser.

That’s it!

You can also use your computer or tablet to draw digitally!

Step 1 – Shapes

The first step is to lightly sketch some circles and triangles. Build up the overall shape of the cat. Try drawing one large oval for the body, a circle for the head and triangles for the legs. You can add some little circles for the paws too.

Step 2 – Ears, nose and tail.

Let’s continue to softly draw some shapes. Use triangles for the ears and nose and an ‘s’ shape for the tail!

Step 3 – Outline

Now we can press a little harder and draw the outline. Let’s draw the eyes, mouth and some whiskers too!

Step 4 – Scribble!

Now we can start scribbling! Scribble a darker zig-zag around the outline to make your cat look furry. Shade the inside of the line with the side of your pencil. It doesn’t have to be neat!

Step 5 – Blend and Smudge

Next, use your finger or some tissue paper to blend the lines together a bit. This will give your picture more of a soft look.

Step 6 – Patterns and layers

Let’s scribble again! Add a striped pattern to your cat starting at the back. You can add more pressure and layer up the colours.

Step 7 – Final Touches

Finally, let’s add some light and shade to your cat. Draw softly and blend in some shadows on the left and bottom side of the image. Use an eraser to pick out some highlights.

All done! How does your cat look? Post it in the comments!

What shall we draw next time ?
